Matsunoya
THE CHALLENGE.
Matsunoya, a traditional Japanese soba restaurant, needed a website that would honor the heritage of soba culture while expressing the restaurant’s unique blend of artistry and modernity. The goal was to create a digital presence that felt authentic and accessible, welcoming to locals and appealing to international visitors, without appearing upscale or exclusive. The site also needed to spotlight their community-focused events and artistic ambiance.
Matsunoya's interior
THE CONCEPT.
To capture the spirit of Matsunoya, I began by exploring the cultural roots of soba and the visual atmosphere of the restaurant itself. I crafted a structure that balances storytelling with usability, featuring clean navigation, flexible content sections, and clear paths to information like the menu, events, and location. Inspired by the hand-crafted textures, brushstroke art, and warm materials found inside the restaurant, I designed an interface with subtle traditional patterns, muted color palettes, and a calm, natural rhythm. Modern touches like soft transitions and scroll-based motion bring in a light, contemporary feel without losing the understated charm.
THE EXECUTION.
The final result is a website that feels both grounded and expressive, true to Matsunoya’s identity. Visitors experience a quiet elegance that reflects the restaurant’s artful interior, while intuitive navigation makes it easy to explore the menu, upcoming events, and the story behind the food. The design adapts smoothly across devices and balances tradition with a modern, user-friendly approach, making Matsunoya discoverable and welcoming to all.
